NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 25, 2018) -- Nyack College on Friday claimed both the Men's and Women's 2017-18 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Sportsmanship Awards, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. It marks the second-consecutive year the Warriors claimed both sportsmanship awards.
For the men's award, Nyack was identified as the winner by the total number of sportsmanship votes the institution received over the course of the academic year in men's sports, divided by the total number of male sports sponsored. Nyack boasted a league-high score of 18.40 on the men's side, which edged out University of the Sciences, who finished second with a mark of 17.17. Felician University rounded out the top three on the men's side with a mark of 11.33.
Just like the men's award, the women's honor went to the Warriors as Nyack was identified the winner by the total number of sportsmanship votes the institution received over the course of the academic year in women's sports, divided by the total number of female sports sponsored. The Nyack women posted an average mark of 20.71, while Goldey-Beacom College finished second with a score of 11.67. USciences closed out the top three a point back in third at 10.67.
Nyack was able to capture the men's sportsmanship award thanks in large part to its men's soccer and men's basketball teams capturing their respective team sportsmanship awards. The Warriors men's soccer team is led by head coach and Director of Athletics Keith Davie, while the men's hoops squad is led by Jason Crafton.
The men's cross country and track & field programs each finished third in the voting for their respective sportsmanship awards, as those high point totals also led to the Warriors clinching the sportsmanship title.
Three Nyack women's teams claimed their respective sportsmanship awards to help lead the school to the women's overall award. The trio included women's soccer (Jodel Wright, Head Coach), volleyball (Raquel Shaffer, Head Coach) and women's lacrosse (Lauren Lebo, Head Coach). The women's basketball program placed second in the voting for its award, while the softball team finished third in the voting for that sport's sportsmanship honor.
