Baseball Comes Back to Defeat Assumption 6-5 in Extra Innings

The Nyack College baseball team earned its first win on day one of their Florida SpringBreak trip. The Warriors fought their way back into the game to defeat the Assumption College Greyhounds in 13 innings 6-5. The win improves Nyack's record to 3-1-1.

The Warriors got on the board first in the first inning when Herman Alvarado scored after a Anthony Torreullas sacrifice fly out. Assumption would tie the game in the bottom of the second and eventuall take the lead in the bottom of the 5th with another pair of runs, 1-3. The Greyhounds added another run in the bottom of the 6th to increase their lead to three.

The Warriors battled their way back into the game when they scored twice in the top of the 8th to make the score 3-4. After an error by the Assumption center field Anthony Torreullas and and Herman Alavardo scored for Nyack. The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the 8th, which seemed to secure the win for Assumption. But the Warriors had different plans. John E. Bean III scored after an sacrifice bunt by Hayden Allen. Allen advanced to second on an error by the third base man of the Greyhounds, while Austin Fischer moved to third. Herman Alvarado grounded out to the shortstop, but Fischer was able to reach home and tie the game in the bottom of the 9th.

Both teams tried to squeeze the game winning run in in extra innings. It was Anthony Torreullas who scored the run that would eventually decide the game in the top of the 13th inning when he scored after Bean III grounded out to second base. AJ Vasquez sealed the Warriors striking out all three of the batters he faced in the bottom of the 13th securing the win for the Warriors.

Torreullas led the Warriors with three hits and one RBI. The Warriors will be back tomorrow to face Assumption in another non-conference match up in Florida.
