Baseball Splits with Jefferson Rams in CACC Opener

The Nyack College Baseball team traveled to Philadelphia to face off with the Jefferson University Rams for their 2018 CACC opener. The Warriors took the W in the first match of the doubleheader with a score of 7-5, while the Rams kept the upper hand in the second game and got their win with a score of 9-2.

Game 1

The Rams would come out hot in the bottom of the first in game one and score four consecutive runs to take an early 4-0 lead. But the Warriors answered back in the top of the third when Alex Petterson homered to left field with Matthew Johnson on base to cut the lead down to two, 2-4. Gabriel Vasquez would score in the same inning after an error by the Rams' shortstop to bring Nyack within one. Herman Alvarado tied the game after a Carlos Pino single to come out of the third inning with the score tied at 4-4. The Rams would take the lead again in the bottom of the 5th, before Nyack's Petterson scored off a Alvarado sacrifice fly out in the top of the 7th, 5-5. Both teams tried to get their game winning runs on the board in the remaining two innings. It was Nyack's Luke Kelly who doubled to left center which allowed Petterson and Vasquez to bring two game winning runs home for the Warriors.

Chase Morris started for the Warriors in the first three innings (3 SO, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER) before Jack Kelley took over pitching 6.0 innings and striking out three of the 22 batters he faced.

Game 2

Jefferson scored first in the second game as well when they brought two runs home after a double hit to right center. Nyack answered back in the top of the 4th and the 5th with a run each to take the 2-1 lead. Carlos Pino scored in the top of the 4th and Luke Kelly scored after a Pino single in the 5th. But Jefferson would take matters into their own hands when they scored five runs in the bottom of the 6th and added another in the bottom of the 7th to take game two with a final score of 9-2.

Nyack will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Adelphi to square off with the Panthers in a non-conference match. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm.
