Nyack, NY - The Nyack College baseball team swept the Chestnut Hill College Griffins on Sunday afternoon, because of two comeback efforts. The Warriors looked defeated in game one when they were down 1-6 in the bottom of the 9th. But a a 6-run rally saw the Warriors come back and snatch game one from the Griffins. Game two had an almost identitical set up with the Warriors coming back from 0-5 down to win 6-5. With the sweep the Warriors imporve their overall record to 20-18-1 and their CACC record to 13-11.
Chestnut Hill established a comfortable lead early in game one scoring three times in the top of the first. They added another three runs over the next to innings to jump to a 6-0 lead. The Warriors scored their lone run in the bottom of the 4th when Luke Kelly scored off a Carlos Pino single. Things didn't look to promising for Nyack as the game continued the the Griffins lead remained. With the score being 6-1 in the bottom of the 9th the Griffins looked like the sure winner of game one. But the Warriors didn't stop believing. Nyack loaded the bases and scored its first run when Herman Alavardo was hit by a pitch to make the score 6-2. Austin Fischer then singled to right field to score Gabriel Vazquez. The Warriors were fortunated when a high fly ball by Luke Kelly was dropped by the Griffins left fielder, which allowed Jeremiah Alonzo to score and cut the Chestnut Hill lead down to two. The bases were still loaded and Anthony Torreullas was up to bat. His walk off double base hit to right field made the impossible come true and the Warriors completed their come back rally to take the 7-6 win in game one.
The Griffins scored first in game two as well. After two scoreless innings by both teams the Griffins put up five runs in the top of the third. Nyack wasn't able to chip away on that lead until the bottom of the 6th. Alec Petterson singled to which advanced Pino to third base and an error by the Griffins' outfield allowed Pino to reach home plate. Gabriel Vazquez then singled to left field and scored Isaak Bustamante and Alec Petterson. The Warriors scored again in the bottom of the 7th. Anthony Torreullas forced the walk with bases loaded and allowed Herman Alavardo to score. Nyack was looking for the game tying run and found it when Gabriel Vazquez singled in the bottom of the 8th and Alec Petterson scored. Austin Fischer's bunt then allowed Vaquez to reach home plate and put the Warriors in the driver's seat with the score being 6-5. Freshman Logan Mann grounded out two and struck out one to make the second comeback of the Warriors perfect.
Up next: Nyack will be back in conference action on Wednesday when they travel to New Jersey to take on the Bloomfield College Bears in a CACC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12pm.
