Warriors Take Defending Champs the Distance But Come Up Short, 76-71

BLOOMFILED, NJ (January 23, 2014)

The Warrior men's basketball team started a strong contest leading defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) champions, Bloomfield College, by eight almost midway through the second half. It would be a close battle all the way to the closing minutes as the Warriors would get edged on the road in a 76-71 loss to the Deacons. 

In the first half the Warriors got off to a slow start as Bloomfield built a 18-7 lead by the 14:05 mark. The Deacons would eventually extend the score to a high point at 31-17 with 7:30 left in the opening period. Nyack would slowly chip away at their deficit and by the halftime break trailed 41-38. Chris Hampton (Queens, NY) would score 17 of his game-high 26 points in the opening period.

The second half got to a much better start as Nyack jumped out with an 8-0 run, giving their fist 42-41 lead on the night and then extending the score board 46-41. A three-pointer by Warrior Khalid Samuels (Mt. Vernon, NY) at 15:57 sparked the Warrior's highest lead as the score reflected 51-43.

From here a 10-2 Bloomfield run would tie the game at 53 apiece and for the remainder of the half both teams maintained a tight battle. The game took a total of 6 ties and 12 lead changes. With 3:18 left Bloomfield notched 11 of the next 15 points to take them over the top en route the 76-71 game win.

Nick Moore (Sicklerville, NJ) snatched a Warrior team-high 10 rebounds on the night while adding 9 points and 3 blocks. Classmate Samuels led with a game high 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 13 points in the losing effort. Bloomfield's Claude Blue led his team with a high of 20 points and game-high 12 rebounds. The loss dropped Nyack to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in CACC play while Bloomfield improve to 11-7 overall and 9-1 in the conference as they continue to remain No. 1 in CACC standings.

Men's hoops will be back in action for a home contest against Wilmington University on Saturday January 25th at Bowman Gymnasium. First tip is scheduled for a 3PM start as fans unable attend the game can follow the action via the live stats link on CollegeTVticket.com
