CALDWELL, N.J.- The Nyack College men's basketball team lost their road match to the Caldwell Cougars 88-79 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Tuesday night.
With the loss the Warriors fall to 3-2 and 0-1 in CACC play, while Caldwell imroves to 4-1 and stays undefeated in CACC play with 2-0.
After a back and forth game in the starting minutes and the score tied 7-7 at 16:10 mark, the Warriors used a 12-2 run to built an early lead as they pulled ahead 19-9 at the 12:54 mark of the opening half. Caldwell battled back behind a 20-11 run over the next six minutes to trim the score down to 30-29 with 6:51 left in the half. The Warriors kept Caldwell at bay the rest of the half as they connected on a buzzer beater by Shawn Witherspoon to lead 45-40 at the break.
The second half would start with a 17-9 Cougar run to bring Caldwell in front 57-54 with 13:28 to play in the game. The next eight minutes featured six ties and two leads changes as the teams battled for control of the game. Caldwell emerged on the plus side with under five minutes to go in the game. Nyack pulled even at 69 with 4:41 on the clock. However, Caldwell answered with a 10-0 to push ahead and seize the momentum. The 10-point lead would be enough for the Cougars to hold off the Warriors, who would not come closer than to six points in the final minutes of the game, which eventually finished with a score of 88-79 in favor of the Cougars.
Senior Jaron Smith led the Warriors with 22 points, shooting 6-14 from behind the arc. Shawn Witherspoon recorded 13 points, while also adding one steal, two assists, and five rebounds. Imran Ritchie and Ga'Briel Chandler both scored 12 points each. Ritchie also added a game-high seven assist.
The Warriors will be back on Wednesday, November 30th, when they travel to Concordia College for a CACC match-up. Tip off is slated fo 7pm.
