Men's Basketball Opened Season with ECC-CACC Challenge at Daemen College

Amherst, NY - The Nyack College men's basketball team opened its 2017-18 season with the ECC-CACC Challenge played at Daemen College. The Warriors squared off with the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks yesterday, before taking on the hosts Daemen College today. 

Game 1 Nyack 60 - Roberts Wesleyan 67

The Warriors were edged out in their season opener against the Redhawks on Friday night as part of the ECC-CACC Challenge. The first two minutes saw several turnovers and missed shots and had both teams tied 2-2 at the 18th minute mark. The Redhawks used a 8-2 run within the next three minutes to jump to a six point lead with 15:25 to go in the first half. Nyack answered with a 12-4 run to take the lead after a 3-point jump shot by sophomore Curtis Thompson at the 11th minute mark. Both teams continued to battle back and fourth and the spectator saw aother round of forced turnovers and strong defensive play on both ends. With the game scored at 16-16 Roberts Wesleyan jumped to a 5-point lead with 6:39 remaining. But a Imran Ritchie 3-pointer and a layup by Carl Balthazar would tie the game up again, 21-21. Both teams tried to gain the upper hand in the remaining minutes of the first half. The Redhawks managed to take a three point lead into halftime, 23-26. 

The Warriors put the first points up on the scoreboard in the second half after Shawn Witherspoon successfully made a layup eight seconds into the half, 25-26. But the Redhawks would answer with a 7-0 run to jump ahead 25-33 with 17:10 left in the game. The back and fourth action would continue when Nyack used a 8-2 run to get back within two points, 33-35. At the 12th minute mark Nyack's Carl Balthazar's layup would tie the game at 37-37. However, Roberts would make one final push and jump ahead to a nine point lead after a 13-4 run, 41-50. But the Warriors refused to give up and fought their way back into the game cutting the lead down to three with 3:41 left to play. The Redhawks continued to keep the upper hand extending their lead back to 10-point with 1:25 to go. Nyack tried everything in the final minute of the game coming as close as five points but was eventually held off by the Redhawks. The game finished with a final score of 60-67 in favor of the Redhawks. 

Carl Balthazar led the Warriors with 13 points. Teammate Curtis Thompson came up right behind him with 12 on the night. 

Game 2 Nyack 60 - Daemen 78

The Warriors took on the hosts Daemen College in their second match of the ECC-CACC Challenge on Saturday afternoon. The game was tied at the 16:59 minute mark 4-4, before Daemen used a 8-0 run to jump to an early lead. Throughout the first half Daemen would extend that lead to 15 points with 5:43 to play in the first half. A Rashard Lewis 3-pointer would spark a comeback rally by the Warriors. Within the next three minutes Nyack cut the Daemen lead back down to 4-points. But the Wildcats would keep their cool and carry a 8-point lead into halftime, 32-40. 

Throughout the second half the Wildcats would slowly extend their lead to 22 points, 36-58, at the 12:50 minute mark. Nyack was trying to fight their way back into the game but were kept at bay by the Wildcats who held on to their lead until the end. The game would finish with a final score of 60-78 in favor of the Wildcats. 

Four Warriors recorded double-digits on the night. Rashard Lewis led Nyack with 14 points, While Elijah Farley and Shawn Witherspoon added 11 points each. Carl Balthazar ended the night with 10 points. 

Up next: The Warriors will be back in action on Wednesday when they host the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds in their 2017-18 home opener. Tip-off is slated for 7:00pm.
