The Nyack College men's soccer team started its 2018 campaign with a succesful trip to New Hampshire. The Warriors squared off with the Franklin Pierce University Ravens in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon which ended with a final score of 1-0. With the win the Warriors start their season with a 1-0 overall record.
Both teams started rather slow trying to figure out the opponent's playing style. Nyack had more of the ball in the beginning stages of the game but was unable to create any promising opportunities in the final third. The Ravens then started to take over but were unable to find the back of the net. They were denied several times by senior golakeeper Alvaro Magel who put together a great performance to keep Nyack in the match. Franklin Pierce almost scored with seconds left in the first half when a Raven's header missed the goal by inches after a freekick. The first half ended with a score of 0-0. FRanklin Pierce put up six shots in the first 45 minutes, while the Warriors were unable to get off any attempts on target.
Nyack started off better in the second half firing two shots towards the Raven's net in the first six minutes. In the 58th minute sophomore Alex Garcia cut in from the left side to take a shot which took a deflection off the goalkeepers hands and found the back of the net to give Nyack the 1-0 lead. Franklin Pierce was now pushing forward and created several promising opportunties but was denied by Magel. The Nyack back four didn't allow anything else the in the dying minutes of the game and the Warriors closed out the match with a 1-0 margin securing their first win of the season.
Franklin Pierce outshot the Warriors with 13 to four. Six of those 13 shots were on target but were denied by Alvaro Magel who totaled six saves on the day. Nyack will take a day to recover and be back on the road on Saturday when they take on the College of St. Rose Golden Knights in another non-conference match up. Kick off is slated for 7:00pm on Saturday.
