Men's Soccer Battles to 3-3 Draw with Southern Connecticut in Home Opener

Nyack, NY - The Nyack College men's soccer team returned back to action on Friday, when they hosted the Southern Connecticut State University Owls for their 2019 home opener. The game ended once again in a draw for the Warriors with a final score of 3-3 after double overtime.

Both teams battled back and forth throughout the first 15 minutes of the game. The deadlock was broken in the 16th minute when the Owls' center back headed the ball over his own goalkeeper into the net for the 1-0 Nyack lead. The Owls answered back in the 23rd minute when Devante Texeira found Matthew Surette in the box, whose header landed in the top left corner for the equalizer.

In the second half the Warriors once again saw themselves in front when Mitchell Reed found the back of the net after a Javier Fernandez assist. With 20 minutes left the Owls tied the game once again when Texeira found Francisco Roldan in the box. Three minutes later the Owls would take their first lead of the day when Juan Avila found the back of the net with 17 minutes left in the game. Nyack pushed everything forward in the final minutes of the game and was rewarded with 17 seconds left when Mitchell Reed's header bounced back off the crossbar where Fabio Bruns Ribeiro was ready to push the ball over the line to force overtime.

Neither team could find the game winner in extra time and the game finished with a score of 3-3. The Owls outshot the Warriors 11-8, while freshman goalkeeper Jose Pere Piqueras made three saves.

Nyack will be back on Sunday when they host the St. Anselm College Hawks at 1:30pm at Nyack High School.
