NYACK, NY - Earlier this month, the Nyack College men's and women's cross country team hosted its annual Running Warrior 3k Walk and 5k Road Race.
Nyack alumni, the campus student body, Warrior athletics teams, and other participants spanning the campus community woke up early for a morning of exercise and fellowship for a great cause. The coaching staff, advancement alumni association, and Director of Athletics, Keith Davie, would like to thank everyone who participated in the pouring rain!
What started off as a team ALS Ice-bucket Challenge turned into a humbling team ministry for the Running Warriors. Before the race, the Nyack cross country team was excited to recognize David Kurt McClain, father of softball alumna Kathleen McClain Sullo '14 as this year's Running Warrior Honorary Guest. Mr. McClain has been living with ALS for close to twelve years now, surpassing the disease's life expectancy by three times. Despite being bedridden, paralyzed from the shoulders down, and eating from a feeding tube, Mr. McClain never complains.
"He is the most positive individual you could ever meet," expressed Coach Deylii who shared how Mr. McClain communicates and inspires friends and family on social media and email. "Although he may have limitations, David's focus is not on himself but on each opportunity he has to encourage and inspire others."
Half of the race proceeds went towards helping cover the cost of an ALS van that will allow David easier access to doctor appointments, attending church, and being able to be at more family functions. See here on how to contribute to the ongoing fundraiser for the McClain family via gofundme.com
