The Nyack College softball team traveled to the University of Sciences on Saturday, taking on the Devils in a conference doubleheader where the Warriors dropped the first game 7-3 and then narrowly lost a close second game 4-3.
In the first game, the Devils jumped into the lead with three runs scored in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fifth, Nyack got on the scoreboard when Kayleigh VanDover singled up the middle with two outs and then scored on Erin O'Brien's following RBI double. Katie Lupinacci brought in O'Brien for another run on an RBI single, putting the score at 3-2. USciences pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth, bringing in four runs on a grand slam with two outs. Nyack scored one more run in the top of the seventh as Stephanie White led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then was brought home on Katie Lupinacci's sacrifice fly. The Warriors had two runners on base to try to mount a comeback, but they were left on base to end the inning and the game in a 7-3 Nyack loss.
In the second game, the Warriors took an early lead in the top of the first as Katie Lupinacci walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on Alissa Brugnoli's RBI single. Aferdita Sinanaj reached base on a fielder's choice and then stole second, but was left stranded to end the inning. USciences answered in the bottom of the first by scoring one run to tie the score, then added another in the bottom of the third to go ahead. The Devils scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead 4-1. In the top of the fifth, Gabrielle Placencia singled and advanced to third on Katalina Padilla's following single, then came in for the score as Tia Celano hit into a double play. Erin O'Brien followed with a walk and then stole second to get into scoring position. Katie Lupinacci hit an RBI single to bring in O'Brien for the run. In the top of the seventh, with the Warriors down 4-3, Katalina Padilla singled to center field to get on base. Angelique Alires came in to pinch-run and advanced to second to put the tying run in scoring position with two outs, but the game ended with a groundout and the Warriors lost a close game 4-3.
Katie Lupinacci led the Warriors with 3 combined RBIs, and Erin O'Brien added 3 hits for the day. Brittany Blair pitched the whole first game, and Stephanie White started the second game for Nyack.
Up next, the Warriors travel to Bridgeport on Modnay 4/23 with games at 2:30PM and 4:30PM.
