Auburndale, FL - The Nyack College softball team opened its 2020 season with their first two games down in Florida. The Warriors fell to Southwestern Minn. State (1-9, 5 innings) and Pitt.-Johnstown (1-4) in their first action of the new season.
Game 1 - Nyack vs. Southwestern Minn. St., 1-9 after 5 innings
The Warriors got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Arielys Rodriguez singled to left field and worked her way around the bases. Rodriguez stole second after Janelle Adams struck out and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Freshman Kaila Quick drove Rodriguez home with a single to right field to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
SMSU answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, before adding six runs in the bottom of the third to pull away with the game. The Mustangs added another pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth for a final score of 1-9.
Game 2 - Nyack vs. Pitt.-Johnstown, 1-4
In the second game of the day the Warriors took on the Pitt.-Johnstown Mountain Cats. Both teams struggled to get going offensively throughout the first five innings. The Mountain Cats eventually got going in the top of the sixth with four runs. Nyack tried to find their way back into the game. Alyssa Giampolo doubled in the bottom of the 7th. Kelly Rattigan pinch ran for Giampolo and reached home off a single to center field by Jayna Celano. Giampolo's run remained the only Warrior run on the game, with a final score of 1-4.
Up next: Nyack will be back on Monday, when they square off with Edinboro and Ferris State.
