The Nyack College Women's Basketball team was unable to come away with a victory over the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon in their non-conference home opener. The loss forced the Warriors to regress to a 1-2 overall record for the 2015-2016 campaign.
How It Happened:
Senior Jamie McKeither (Laurel, MD) posted a team high of 17 points for the Warriors, going 7-10 from the foul line, as well as topping the Warriors with 14 rebounds; 9 defensive and 5 offensive. Mckeither also posted 2 steals and 2 assists to help the team. Following close behind was sophomore Kelli Smoot (Baltimore, MD) with 16 points for the night. Smoot earned a 50% shooting percentage from the foul line, with 1 steal, 1 assist, and 2 rebounds. Senior Raven Makins (Laurel, MD) wrapped up the top scorers for the night, earning 10 points for Nyack, while simultaneously contributing 6 rebounds.
Though matched in rebounds for the night at 40 each, Nyack was outperformed in field goals, with 50% made compared to 35.6%, and 3 point shots made, at 30.8% to 16.7%. They achieved their largest lead over the Warriors in the 4th quarter of 20 points with 6:37 remaining on the clock. Despite the 15 point victory, Nyack managed to break 4 ties and exchange the lead with Bayamon 4 times as well.
The Warriors remained competitive through the first quarter; never falling more than 5 points behind. The second quarter saw Nyack break ties and trade position in the lead, rallying from a deficit. The Warriors continued to press leading to a halftime score of 33-29. Post halftime, Bayamon exploded into the 3rd quarter immediately establishing a 10 point lead over the Warriors. They maintained the lead preventing Nyack from any score progression through 4 minutes of play. Despite a rally from the Warriors, the quarter ended with Bayamon sustaining their 10 point lead. The final quarter saw Bayamon continue with their aggressive progress closing the match with a final score of 75-60.
Women's Basketball will return to the court on Tuesday, November 24th. The Warriors will face Post University in their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match of the 2015-2016 campaign. Tipoff is scheduled to happen at 5:30pm at Post University.
