The Warriors Women's Basketball squad put forth a strong team effort in a contest that featured 7 ties and 4 lead changes against the visiting Cougars of Caldwell University. Nyack overcame a fourteen point deficit to get within four points but by the end of regulation, Caldwell would take home the 76-72 victory.
The Lady Warriors drop to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in league play while the Cougars improve to 4-3 overall and remain undefeated (2-0) in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).
How It Happened:
Senior Raven Makins (Laurel, MD) earned the most points of the night with 22, shooting 6-8 from the free throw line and 8-21 from inside the paint. Makins also earned a court high of 12 rebounds with 9 offensive and 3 defensive. In addition to her court high statistics, Makins was also able to record 2 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Senior Jamie McKeither (Laurel, MD) also contributed 16 points to the Warrior effort as well as 8 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Senior Tori Trador (Seminole, FL) and freshman Lisa Fields (Bronx, NY) each tallied 8 points for Nyack wrapping up the top scorers of the night.
Caldwell jumped to an explosive start in the 1st quarter earning a 7 point lead in the first 3 minutes of play. For the first five minutes, the Warriors points were limited to free throws. The remaining 5 minutes saw Nyack manufacture opportunities to score, landing jump shots all around the court. The quarter would conclude with Nyack in a 4 point deficit at 22-18. In the second quarter, Makins landed 4 consecutive shots to tie the game 27-27. Caldwell pulled ahead momentarily holding tight to the lead before McKeither added 4 shots to take the lead. In the final minute of the quarter Caldwell managed to tie the game, but 2 free throws would secure the lead in Nyack's favor as the teams retired for half time.
The third quarter emerged with desperation to claim the lead. The two teams battled for the lead, breaking ties and exchanging lead positions, but Caldwell settled in the lead closing the quarter at 56-50. Caldwell came into the final quarter of play determined to stay in the lead and established a 14 point lead. With 3 minutes left to play, the Warriors climbed from a 14 point deficit. Though Nyack landed a lay-up at the buzzer, they were only able to close the score gap to 4 points. The game would conclude in Caldwell's favor with a final score of 76-72.
