Women's Basketball Earns first Win of the Season against Mercy, 71-59

VALHALLA, N.Y. – The Nyack College women's basketball team defeated the Mercy Colege Mavericks, 71-59, in a non-conference match at Westchester Community College on Tuesday night.

The Warriors (1-2) picked up their first win of the 2016-17 season, while the Mavericks dropped to 0-3.

Nyack was led by freshman Yamalis Villegas who had a game-high 16 points, while Tayelor McCalister and Bryanna Brown both added 12 points. Janae Bailey concluded the night with a game-high 17 rebounds and poured in eight points.

The Warriors jumped out to a 6-2 lead early on with 7:38 left in the first quarter, but the Mavericks responded with a 10-2 run to take a 12-8 lead. Mercy held a 15-11 lead with 2:08 left in the quarter before Nyack cut the deficit to one, 15-14, with 1:31 remaining in the frame. The first quarter would eventually finish with a score of 19-14 in favor of the Mavericks.

Mercy opened up the scoring in the second quarter with a three to earn their largest lead of the night, 22-14, with 8:39 left before halftime. The Warriors came back with six unanswered to cut the Mercy advantage to just two, 22-20, with 4:34 left in the half. The Mavericks increased the lead back to four, but the Warriors ended the half on a 7-4 run to cut the Mercy lead to 31-30, heading into halftime.

The third quarter was marked by a 16-0 run for the Warriors to take their largest lead of the game at 52-39 with 2:10 left in the quarter. Mercy battled back and cut the deficit to ten, 55-45, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mavericks opened up the fourth quarter with five straight points to cut the Nyack lead to five, 55-50, with 7:16 remaining. The Warriors increased the lead back to ten, 62-52, with 4:12 left on the game clock. Mercy responded by getting within five, 64-59, at the 1:28 mark, but Nyack would end the game on a 7-0 run to seal the victory.

The Warriors shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) and 31.6 percent (6-for-19) from beyond the arc, while Mercy shot 31.9 percent (22-for-69) from the floor and 25.0 percent (7-for-28) from downtown. 

The Nyack women's basketball team will be back in action this Saturday, November 19th, when they host the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas. Tip-off is slated for 1pm at Bowman Gym.
