The Nyack Warriors women's basketball team hosted Mercy College on Thursday night, falling just short in a comeback effort to lose the game 65-68.
In the first quarter, the score bounced back and forth as the two teams kept it close. Nyack controlled the ball in the paint, scoring their points off of layups and free throws earned by aggressive play. Mercy chose to attack with jump shots, making three 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes.
The trends continued into the second quarter, with Mercy sinking more 3's and Nyack charging into the basket as through score stayed close. Down by 8 with 3 minutes left in the half, the Warriors scored two free throws and three layups to go on an 8-3 run. Nyack ended the half down by 3, with the score at 23-26.
At the start of the second half, Mercy took advantage of some early Nyack errors to start pulling ahead. The Warriors offense struggled to manufacture points, even as they stayed consistent in their defensive rebounding game to keep the ball away from Mercy. Nyack was held scoreless for two straight minutes at two different points during the quarter as Mercy claimed an 18-point lead.
Japria Karim-Duvall scored a 3-point shot to close out the third quarter, which sparked a surge for the Warriors in the final quarter. The Nyack defense kept Mercy from scoring for nearly the first 3 minutes of the fourth, and the Warriors offense did their part with two consecutive Bryanna Brown layups and another 3-pointer from Karim-Duvall. Strong play under the basket kept the momentum on Nyack's side, and they took the lead at 65-64 on a Jocelin Wright jump shot. With 3 seconds left in the game, Mercy made two free throws, and then a Nyack foul at the buzzer led to two last Mercy points as the Warriors lost a hard-fought game.
Audrey Matteson led the Warriors offense with 18 points, and made all 8 of her 8 free throw attempts. As a team, Nyack shot 92% at the foul line. Bryanna Brown logged 9 rebounds, and Yamalis Villegas and Japria Karim-Duvall each had a block on defense.
Up next, the Warriors host Concordia on Saturday.
