Women's Basketball Falls to Caldwell at Home
The Nyack College women's basketball team closed out 2017 with a home game against conference opponent Caldwell University on Saturday. The Warriors took a 60-80 loss that brought their CACC record to 2-3.
The Warriors and Cougars kept it close to start off the game, with both offenses trading shots in a back-and-forth battle that lasted nearly the entire first quarter. Heading into the second quarter, Caldwell went on a 12-2 run that was stopped short by consecutive baskets from Bryanna Brown and Torie Eggers. Nyack also buckled down on defense, with Audrey Matteson grabbing a steal and then a block on two quick defensive stands, each of which led to a Nyack score.
The Warriors battled back within 4 after some strong rebounding, but the Cougars went on another scoring run, taking advantage of some Nyack errors to settle back into the lead. Nyack went into halftime down 32-43.
Caldwell kept challenging Nyack with stiff defense in the second half, even as the Warriors were able to capitalize on free throw attempts in the third quarter to stay within reach on the scoreboard. Audrey Matteson scored on three jump shots for consecutive possessions with 15 minutes left in the game, but the Cougars' offense could not be slowed.
Matteson and Bryanna Brown were the Warriors' main scorers in the second half, combining for 21 of Nyack's 28 second-half points. Tina Lebron was the top offensive spark for the Cougars, making four 3-point shots  in the fourth quarter as Caldwell continued to pull away. The Warriors continued fighting all the way to the end, with Kelli Smoot making two free throws and then a jump shot with just over a minute left in the game. Nyack was not able to overcome the deficit, and finished the game with a loss.
Bryanna Brown led the Warriors offense with 22 points, and contributed 3 steals on defense. Japria Karim-Duvall grabbed 8 rebounds, 7 on the defensive end, and Audrey Matteson added 2 blocks.
Up next, the Warriors kick off 2018 by hosting conference opponent Bloomfield College on Wednesday, 1/3.
