Women's Basketball Upended by Post Eagles in Division Match
The Nyack College women's basketball team hosted conference opponent Post University on Tuesday night, as the Warriors fought back from an early deficit but ended the game in a 71-91 loss to the Eagles. The Warriors' CACC record now stands at 2-11.
In the first half, the Warriors relied on short-range shots to get themselves on the scoreboard. The first 10 points scored by Nyack all came from jump shots, with Audrey Matteson kicking off the offensive start for the Warriors. The Eagles made their shots as well as Post jumped out to an early lead. A rebound by Japria Karim-Duvall led to a score by Bryanna Brown, who drew a foul on the play and knocked down the resulting free throw as well just before the start of the second quarter.
Nyack struggled with unforced errors, but kept playing aggressively on defense, with Karim-Duvall and Jocelin Wright both fighting against Post for rebounds under the basket. With 5 minutes left in the half, Yamalis Villegas scored on a 3-pointer, and an immediate steal by Matteson resulted in a score from Brown. The Warriors went into halftime down by 14.
The Eagles' offense continued to push back against the Warriors. Matteson's jump shot to open up the second half led to a brief offensive run by the Warriors, punctuated by a 3-pointer from Karim-Duvall, but it was not enough for Nyack to overtake the Eagles. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors outscored Post on an offensive surge, sparked by two consecutive steals from Villegas and a resulting score. Karim-Duvall followed it up with a jump shot and then an immediate 3-pointer with 2 minutes left to play, but there was not enough time for the Warriors to complete a comeback, and Nyack finished with a loss.
Bryanna Brown led the Warriors offense with 19 points as three Warriors scored in the double-digits; Brown, Audrey Matteson with 16, and Japria Karim-Duvall with 13. Karim-Duvall also added 6 rebounds and 3 assists
