Nyack, NY - The Nyack College women's basketball team was back after their Thanksgiving break to host the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon in a NCAA women's basketball match.
The Warriors got off to the better start with a 10-3 run in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The Firebirds answered with six consecutive points, but the Warriors scored an unanswered seven points to keep UDC at a distance with 2:36 left in the first quarter. In the remaining minutes, the Firebirds went on an 11-1 run to take their first lead of the day right before the end of the first quarter, 18-21. Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, with the Warriors keeping the upper hand, outscoring the Firebirds 13-10 to take a one-point lead into halftime, 32-31.
With the start of the third, the Firebirds reclaimed the lead with back-to-back jumpers, before a Jocelin Wright three-pointer tied the game at 35-35 with nine minutes to go in the third quarter. The Firebirds went on a 12-0 run, which they held on to throughout the remainder of the period to take a 13-point lead, 38-51, into the final period of the day.
Nyack tried to find its way back into the game, but the Warriors could only trim down the Firebird lead to five points.
Kyla Given led the Warriors with a double-double, scoring a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Nyack will be back in action on Wednesday when they host the Caldwell University Cougars in their first CACC match of the year. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
