Lacrosse Rallies Past Caldwell For Programs First CACC Win

VERONA, NJ - Led by a game high twelve goals from sophomore captain Lauren Lebo, the current No. 1 shooter and scorer in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), Nyack College women's lacrosse successfully notched their first league win over Caldwell College by a final score of 17-12.

Inside The Game:
The Cougars scored the first point of the game within five minutes. Eventually Lebo responded with a goal for Nyack to tie the match 1-apiece.  Both teams were tied for almost half of the first period until Nyack took possession. After a time out by Caldwell, Lebo would score once again (2-1). At 15:57 the Warriors won the draw and Victoria Lopez Nash assisted teammate Hee Jae Ko with another goal (3-1). Nash then scored off an unassisted goal two minutes later, but with eight minutes remaining Caldwell took advantage from an opportunity to scored off a free position shot. During the last play of the game, Warrior Lebo fired in a quick goal with less than three seconds on the board to give Nyack a 5-2 cushion going into the halftime break.

The second period showcased two teams hungry for a win. Although Caldwell played with intensity, Nyack proved themselves worthy of a win. The second half began with a free position goal by Caldwell to record their third point, however Lebo netted four consecutive shots in a time span of five minutes directly after to stretch the lead 9-3. With twenty-five minutes of play still left on the clock, Warrior Ko scored after teammate Nash won draw control at 24:45 to bring the Warriors up 10-3. Determined to trim the deficit, Caldwell rallied off a 4-0 run to come within three (10-7). By the 18:30 mark, the Warriors called a time out and came back with more as both teams alternated goals. Lebo tallied her tenth goal of the game midway into the second period and two minutes later, scored again (13-8). After a time out by Caldwell, the Cougars managed to score along with Ko, scoring once again for the Warriors, assisted by Amanda Carter. The Cougars replied with a goal with less than eight minutes in the game, Ko assisted Lebo in another, and senior Allyson Rola followed with a free position shot at 6:42 (16-10). The Cougars attempted to close the gap landing two consecutive goals (16-12), but with thirty seconds left on the clock, after a turnover by Caldwell, Lebo scored the game winning goal just before the horn leaving the final score to reflect a 17-12 Nyack victory.

A Closer Look:

  • Turnovers dominated Tuesday's affair, with both sides recording 27 total.
  • Nyack was strong again on the draws, winning by a margin of 19-9 as Lebo garnered 10 on the day for the Warriors.
  • Christina Gonzalez led Caldwell with a game-high 7 ground balls while Warrior Cervantes scooped a team-best 4 ground balls in the effort.
  • Adria Ostafi and Melissa Garris together saved 5 shots for the Cougars as Nyack's Jacqueline Simeon recorded 8 stops in sixty minutes of action.
