Nyack, NY - The Nyack College women's soccer team garnered their first victory of the 2018 season with a 3-2 double overtime win over the Jefferson University Rams on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Warriors improve their record to 1-3-1 and 1-1-1 in conference play.
The Rams were the dominating team in the first half getting denied several times by freshman goalkeeper Nicole Benesch and the crossbar. Jefferson outshot the Warriors by 11-3 during the first 45 minutes. Benesch recorded four saves to keep Nyack in the game.
The Rams finally scored their first goal in the 69th minute when a shot by Emily Discavage found the back of the Warrior net. However, two minutes later the Warriors were rewarded a penatly kick after freshman Shanice Rapp was brought down in the 16-yard box. It was Rapp herself who converted the pk for her third goal of the season and her second this week to tie the game at 1-1.
The Rams continued to press forward and were rewarded in the 76th minute when Kelsey Butler scored off a rebound in the six yard box. But Nyack came back again. A Kaelan Kanai corner kick found its way directly into the Rams' goal to tie the game once again and push the game to overtime.
Neither team was able to find the game winner in the first period of extra time foricing it to double overtime. In the 104th minute the Warriors earned a freekick outside the box. Freshman Maria Vargas stepped up and curled the ball into the Rams' net for the game winner.
Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Benesch finished the day with six saves keeping the Warriors in the game on multiple occasions.
Nyack will be back this Tuesday when they travel to the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans for a non-conference match. Kick off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
