Nyack Volleyball Opens Season With Two Losses At SCSU Trimatch

Nyack, NY - The Nyack College volleyball team opened its 2018 campaign with a trip to Southern Connecticut State University to face the hosts and Pace University in non-conference action. The Warriors lost both games in three sets and open their season with a 0-2 record. 

The first set against the Setter of Pace University saw a close back and forth action with several lead changes. With the score 8-7 in favor of the Setters, Pace was able to slowly pull away scoring three unanswered rallies. Nyack tried to stay with the Setters who continued to increase their point lead seven. The first set finished with a final score of 25-15 in favor of the Setters. 

Nyack got off to a better start in set two going up by five points. But the Setters came back to tie the game and take the lead, which saw them finish the second set with 25-15 as well.

Nyack was hopeful to get back into the game in set three after holding a 3-2 lead in the beginning stages. But the Setters took over set three as well jumping to an early lead that would increase until the end. The third set finished with a score of 25-13 in favor of the Setters who took the match in three. 

In game two the Warriors faced the hosts Southern Connectiut State University. The Owls jumped to an early 5-1 lead in the first set, but Nyack answered back with four consecutive scored rallies cutting the Owls' lead down to one, 4-5. But SCSU scored seven consecutive points to pull away with 12-5, which set them up to take set one with a final score of 25-15. 

Set two better for Nyack with three points right from the get go, but SCSU came back to go up by two, 6-8. Nyack then produced a seven point run to jump to a 15-10 lead, before the Owls slowly worked their way back into the set with eight consecutive points of their own. The second set continued to be close until the end with the Owls coming up on top the Warriors, 25-22. 

SCSU took the energy they gained from their first two sets to jump to an early 11-1 lead in set three. Nyack was unable to find their way back into the game and the set would finish with a final score of 12-25. With the win in the last set the Owls took the match in three against the Warriors. 

Senior Larreya Hayden led the Warriors with a combined 15 kills on the days, while sophomore Rachel Medin led Nyack with a combined 42 assists. 

Up next: The Warriors will be back on Friday when they face off with Le Moyne College and Molloy College at the Molloy College Trimatch. First game is scheduled for 3:00pm against the hosts. Their second game will be played at 5:00pm.
