Volleyball Comes Back to Take Game Two Against Assumption

Old Westbury, NY - The Nyack College volleyball program traveled to Long Island, New York to compete in a trimatch hosted by NYIT on Saturday.

After suffering a 3-0 loss in the opener to the host school, the Warriors came back from 0-1 down in the second match to take the win against the Assumption College Greyhounds, 3-1. Rachel Medin recorded double-doubles in both matchups, accounting for 53 assists and 25 digs on the day. Larreya Hayden tied her career-high in the second game of the day, posting 13 in a four-set win, while totaling 21 kills on the day.

Nyack vs. NYIT (12-25, 20-25, 16-25)

The Bears jumped out to a 11-3 lead over the Warriors and took set one with a final score of 25-12. Nyack enjoyed a better start into the second set with a 10-3, but NYIT came back with six consecutive points to cut the Nyack lead down to one. With the game tied at 11 the Bears would slowly move away and take the second set with a score of 25-20. The third set started as a copy of the first with the Bears jumping to a 11-3 lead. NYIT held on to that margin and took set three and the game with a final score of 25-16.

Hayden led the Warriors with eight kills, while Kyra Zuhlke added six. Rachel Medin contributed 17 assists and 11 digs.

Nyack vs. Assumption (17-25, 25-17, 25-22, 28-26)

Assumption jumped to a quick 13-5 lead in set one, which they would defend until the end winning set one with 25-17. The Warriors answered with a 16-4 start in set two, which they would use to win their first set of the season with a final score of 25-17. The Greyhounds shocked the Warriors in the third set with a 7-1 start and it looked as if Assumption was set to swing the game their way. But Nyack was not done yet. The Warriors fought their way back into the game tying it at 21-21. With the score tied Nyack scored off a kill by Abby Wright, a block by Zuhlke and Megan Ma'afala-Maiava and an attack error by Assumption to jump to a three-point lead. This would set up the Warriors for a 25-22 win in set three.

The Greyhounds got off to the better start in the fourth set with 7-4 lead. But Nyack came back and took their first lead of the set after a kill by Zuhlke, 10-9. The game would now swing back and forth with several tied scores and lead changes. With the score 20-20 Nyack was able to pull aaway by three and look as the sure winner of the game with the score 24-21. But Assumption answered with four consecutive points gaining the momentum of the set. Zuhlke's kill tied the game at 25 before the Greyhounds took the lead again with 26-25. But two attack errors by the Greyhounds and the final kill by Hayden secured the first win of the season for the Warriors.

Nyack will be back in action on Wednesay when they open CACC play with a road match at Concordia College in Bronxville, NY at 6pm.
