Waterbury, CT - The Nyack College women's volleyball team traveled to Connecticut on Wednesday night to face off with the Post University Eagles for their first conference match up in 2019. The Warriors decided all three sets in their favor to get their first conference win with a final score of 3-0.
Nyack jumped to a quick 11-5 lead in the first set, before the Eagles used a run of four unanswered points to find their way back into the game. The Eagles tied the first set for the first time with the score at 16. But the Warriors kept their cool and slowly moved away. Kyra Zuhlke's kill secured the first set for Nyack with a score of 25-22.
Nyack got the better start in the second set as well, when they cruised to a 7-1 lead, before Post fought its way back into the game when they came within two, 8-6. Nyack once again pulled away to extend their lead to 13-9, an advantage the Warriors would hold on to until the end of set two, 25-20.
It looked as if the Eagles caught a break in the third set, when they were leading 15-9. But Nyack was determined to finish the game in three, using a 9-2 run to tie and take the lead. The Eagles could not recover and Nyack decided the third set in its favor, with a final score of 25-21.
Nyack's scoring came from a variety of different players, led by junior Kyra Zuhlke with nine kills. Rachel Medin and Abby Wright both recorded seven kills, while Kirby Cuellar finished the day with a total of five kills. Medin orchestrated the Nyack offense with 18 kills, while freshman Shayna Timson jumped in with 10 of her own. Defensivley, British Dawson refused to let the Eagles score recording a total of 20 digs on the day.
Up next: Nyack will back next Tuesday when they will host the Concordia College Clippers for their 2019 home opener at 7pm at Bowman Gym.
